His charisma and ability to portray subtle emotion through narration set the tone for what (I agree with James) could have been a boring film. As far as adaptations go, this one is also very close to the original, keeping the ending in tact. I Am Legend with Will Smith changed the ending, which may have worked better for that particular film.
