It had some great characters played by great actors. Roddy McDowell and Stephen Geoffreys have to be my favorites as Peter Vincent and “Evil Ed”. I honestly didn’t see it as camp, because so much humanity was brought to it in these characters. Of course, Roddy McDowell was a veteran actor by then, and had decades of experience. But Stephen Geoffreys… he just blew me away. His character is supposed to be like comic relief, but he just does a complete 180 in some parts, like when he is touched by the cross and threatens Charley, saying, “The master will kill you. Not fast but slowly…oh, so slowly,” and when he turns back into a human upon his death. I can’t watch that part without crying. His eyes are so fearful, and he’s reaching out in his last moments. It’s very realistic in my eyes of how one would react in death, unlike many other death scenes in movies. Roddy McDowell adds to it with the compassion in his own eyes. I was pretty upset when I heard they remade it. I won’t even venture to see the remake, because nobody can top those performances for me.
