I remember reading some of these in my school library. I remember the Godzilla vs. King Kong “two endings” lie and how I wanted to see both endings so bad. It’s crazy how that was false the whole time.

I’m sure you know James, these books are now collectables and go for decent money on ebay. I remember checking some of these out from my school’s library, especially the Godzilla book.

I used to check them out from my school library. I would read them on the couch, and then Twilight Zone (the 80’s rebirth) would come on, and by the end of the night, I would be too terrified to let my feet touch the floor.

This…is like a page directly from my childhood. Uncannily so. I too was introduced to Godzilla, and classic movie monsters, via this series well before I’d ever seen them for myself. My childhood friend Andy and I used to stare each other down from our assigned seats across the room in our weekly library period in 2nd grade (roughly 1989ish). The second the boring lady quit yammering about this or that we were free to peruse the stacks and we would invariably race to the section where those aging orange covers waited. We both wanted Godzilla like every week. I’d just stare at the pictures for ages. I know what you mean by being able to just see the movie playing out in your mind.

Such great memories, and the memories it built later, having started my love affair with all things creepy as a child. Now that I think about it, it may be that very godzilla book that began a period in my life where I had my head so full of monsters that night time genuinely was terrifying for a while! It also started a life long love affair with Godzilla, something…I tend to keep to myself, ha!

Anyway, it’s really cool to know someone else had this experience. I hope Andy sees this vid some day and smiles. Thanks for sharing these memories with us!

I checked them out all the time along with some shark and dinosaur books. My babysitter had the book “A Pictorial History of Horror Movies” at her house when I was a kid. That book left a big impression on me too.
