The people who make the games create the story for each game as they go. Trying to create a time line is a waste of time.

I think an established timeline maintains consistency in a way which makes the series of games feel more real.

I remember when I was a kid playing a Link to the Past on the SNES, I was always confused about the “link to the past”-reference. I didn’t do a whole lot of research (skipping to read the back of the box among other things) so I just naturally assumed Link to the Past was “Zelda 3”. Then I began to think about the title… link to the PAST.. as far as I knew, you never go back to the past in that game, and the only other link (no pun intended) to that cryptic title is the backstory which is explained after the title-screen, telling you about what happened in the past. I dont know, I probably overcomplicated things back then ^^ but still, that’s when I began to speculate about the timeline; was this game supposed to have some sort of connection to the other games on the NES or was the Dark World actually the past or… ?

Nowadays I know the title is a subtle hint about the game being a prequel to the other two, but back then, it was just one of those things that kept me awake at nights screwing with my mind. ^^

Let’s take Mario as an example: You have Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, and then Super Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World. Then they made Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. So it would be four 2? What is this, Final Fantasy? But then what?
